Boxers come from late-1800s Germany, where a hunting dog used to hold boar and deer was crossed with English Bulldogs. The result is a square, muscular dog with a short, shiny coat in fawn or brindle, often with white markings and a black mask. Adults typically weigh 50 to 80 pounds.
Many Boxers are clownish, affectionate and physical, greeting people with wiggles and leaps. They're smart but bore quickly, so short, varied, reward-based training works better than repetition. Their short muzzle and thin coat make them sensitive to heat and cold, which matters in Decatur's winters. The breed also carries real heart and cancer risks, and many dogs labeled Boxers in listings are mixes, so size and energy will vary from dog to dog.
