American Staffordshire Terriers descend from bull-and-terrier dogs brought from Britain in the 1800s, and the AKC recognized the breed in 1936. They're stocky, muscular, medium-sized dogs with a broad head, pronounced cheeks and a short, glossy coat in nearly any color. Most weigh 40 to 70 pounds.
Many AmStaffs are confident, people-loving and goofy with their families, and they often lean or climb onto a favorite person. Their strength and enthusiasm call for training, good leash manners and early socialization, and some are selective with other dogs no matter how they were raised. The breed is often grouped with pit bull types, so housing and insurance rules deserve a close look. Dogs vary, and a dog's own history matters more than reputation.
