English Pointers, registered by the AKC simply as Pointers, were shaped in England by blending heavy Spanish pointing dogs with foxhound, setter and later greyhound blood to create a fast, wide-ranging bird dog. Their job is to find hidden game by scent and freeze, nose aimed and often one foreleg lifted, until the hunter arrives. The result is a lean, muscular athlete with a long head, soft hanging ears and a short, smooth coat, usually white with liver, lemon, orange or black markings.
At home many Pointers are mild-mannered and affectionate, if a little more independent than other gundogs. Young dogs, and those from field lines, often have enormous stamina and a strong instinct to roam after birds. They tend to thrive with runners, hikers and hunters who can provide daily freedom to stretch out, secure fencing and a soft, warm bed indoors.
