With its towering prick ears, amber eyes and lean, deer-like frame, the Ibizan Hound is hard to mistake for anything else. The breed comes from Ibiza and the other Balearic Islands of Spain, where hunters used packs of these hounds to chase rabbits over rough ground by sight, scent and sound. They are often called ancient because they resemble dogs in Egyptian art, though DNA studies suggest the modern breed formed more recently. Coats are smooth or wire, always red, white or a mix of both.
At home many Ibizans are even-tempered, affectionate and a little clownish, and the breed standard describes them as loyal and trainable. Adopters should plan for a strong chase instinct, remarkable jumping ability and a need to sprint in safely fenced areas, since most cannot be trusted off leash near small animals.
