The Bedlington Terrier comes from the mining country around Bedlington in Northumberland, England, where it was prized for catching vermin and running down rabbits. Its pear-shaped head, woolly topknot and arched back give it the look of a lamb, but the body underneath is lean and fast, and Whippet ancestry likely explains the speed.
At home, many Bedlingtons are gentle, affectionate and calm, then switch to full terrier mode when something small darts past. The crisp, curly coat sheds very little but needs regular brushing and a professional clip every six to eight weeks. In Des Moines, that means a dog that can manage a snowy walk around the block and a quiet evening indoors, as long as someone keeps up with grooming and exercise. Dogs vary, so judge the dog in front of you rather than the breed alone.
