American Water Spaniels were developed in the lake country of Wisconsin in the 1800s as compact all-rounders for hunters who needed a dog that could ride in a small boat, flush birds and retrieve ducks from cold water. Wisconsin made it the state dog, but it's still an uncommon sporting breed. That cold-water, Midwestern heritage is a natural match for Iowa winters.
The dense curly coat sheds water well and comes in liver, brown or dark chocolate. Many of these dogs are devoted to their family, a bit reserved with strangers, clever and sensitive, so gentle, consistent training works best. Plan on daily exercise, regular brushing and ear care, and patience with a youthful streak that can last for years. Each dog varies, so get to know the one in front of you.
