The Black Mouth Cur came out of the rural South, where farmers and hunters relied on it to tree squirrels and raccoons, bay hogs, move cattle and guard the homestead. Its exact roots in Tennessee or Mississippi are debated. Most have a short, dense yellow, red, fawn or brindle coat with the dark muzzle that gives the breed its name, and they're muscular, athletic dogs that often weigh 40 to 95 pounds.
In Cedar Rapids, that heritage shows up as a dog that wants daily work, whether that's a run on the Cedar River Trail, scent games in the living room or short training sessions. Many are devoted to their families, sensitive to harsh handling and wary of strangers. Prey drive can be strong, and the short coat sheds at a moderate level year-round. Each dog is different, so look closely at its actual energy and manners.
