The Malinois comes from Belgium, where herders relied on agile, hardy dogs that were sorted in the 1890s into varieties by coat. The Malinois is the short-haired fawn one, named for the Mechelen region, with a black mask, erect ears and a lean, square build. Most registries count all four Belgian varieties as one Belgian Shepherd, while the AKC lists them as separate breeds.
Their drive and focus made them favorites for police, military and search work, and that same intensity needs an outlet at home. Many Malinois are devoted and sensitive, but a bored dog can turn destructive or reactive. The short double coat is easy to groom, with a heavy shed twice a year and daily brushing then. Dogs vary, so judge each one on its own behavior.
