The Belgian Malinois is the short-haired fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, a herding breed developed in Belgium in the 1890s and named for the Mechelen region. Most registries count the Belgian Shepherd's four coat varieties as one breed, while the AKC lists them separately. Malinois are lean, square dogs with a fawn-to-mahogany coat, a black mask and upright ears, and the short double coat sheds heavily twice a year.
They're prized for police and military work because of their speed, focus and drive, and those traits carry into family life. In Roswell, that means a dog that watches every passing jogger on the Riverwalk and wants a job when it gets home. Many are deeply devoted and sensitive, but dogs vary, and a bored Malinois can turn destructive or reactive.
