Dr. Antonio Nores Martínez developed the Dogo Argentino in Córdoba, Argentina, starting in the 1920s, to hunt wild boar and puma in packs. He built on the extinct Córdoba fighting dog and added breeds such as the Bull Terrier, Great Dane, Boxer and Pyrenean Mastiff. The result is a muscular, short-coated, all-white dog that the AKC later recognized in its Working Group.
Many Dogos are affectionate and playful at home, but they're powerful, confident and driven to chase, so they suit experienced, consistent handlers. Early socialization matters, and some are aggressive toward other dogs or unsafe around cats and small pets. Congenital deafness linked to the white coat is a known concern. In Lawrenceville, expect a dog that wants a job: daily walks, training games and a secure yard.
