The American Foxhound was developed in colonial Maryland and Virginia from English and French hounds, and it still looks like a dog built to run. It's a tall, rangy scent hound, usually 55 to 70 pounds, with long legs, long soft ears, a close hard coat in any color and a gently curved tail. Packs once ran fox and coyote for hours across rough country.
That pack history shows in the temperament. Many Foxhounds are sweet, easygoing and good with other dogs, but they're also independent, food-driven and led by their noses. Dogs from hunting backgrounds may need patient help learning house manners. In Atlanta, with its dense tree cover and plenty of wildlife scents, expect a hound that wants to follow every trail.
