The American Bully was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, mainly from the American Pit Bull Terrier with American Staffordshire Terrier and bulldog breeds mixed in. The goal was a companion with a heavier, more muscular frame and a people-loving temperament. Bullies come in several size varieties, from compact Pockets to tall XLs, in nearly every color, with a short coat that needs little more than a weekly brush.
In Atlanta, the practical questions tend to be housing, heat and manners. Many Bullies are affectionate and eager to please, but their strength makes early training and leash skills important, and tolerance of other dogs varies from dog to dog. Heavier builds tire quickly and overheat, so keeping a Bully lean matters for both joints and summer comfort. Adopters should also expect some landlords and insurers to ask about bully-type dogs.
