Husky is a catch-all name for northern sled dogs. In West Palm Beach listings it usually means a Siberian Husky or a Siberian mix, though it can also cover Alaskan huskies, a mixed racing type, and dogs with some Alaskan Malamute in them. They share erect triangular ears, a thick double coat, a brush tail and sometimes striking blue or mismatched eyes.
Most weigh 35 to 70 pounds and were built to run long distances in a team. Many are friendly, playful and vocal, and also independent, with a strong urge to chase, dig and escape. In South Florida the coat is the biggest adjustment, because it was made for Arctic cold. Heat management, secure fencing and regular brushing matter here, and dogs vary, so judge the dog in front of you.
