The Australian Shepherd took shape on ranches in the American West, not Australia, where Spanish and Basque herding dogs mixed with collie types that arrived with imported sheep. Ranchers prized its stamina and quick thinking, and mid-century rodeo shows made it famous. Aussies are medium-sized, usually 40 to 65 pounds, with a weather-resistant double coat in merle, black or red and eyes that can be blue, brown or a mix.
In West Palm Beach, that history shows up as a dog that wants work. Many Aussies are devoted to their families and watchful with strangers, and they learn fast, for better or worse. Without daily exercise and training, herding instinct can turn into nipping at heels, chasing kids or barking. Dogs vary, but active adopters who enjoy training tend to do best.
