The Miniature Dachshund is the smaller of the Dachshund's two sizes, not a separate breed, and adults weigh 11 pounds or less. German hunters scaled the badger dog down to follow rabbits into narrow burrows, which explains the long back, short legs, deep chest and big voice. Minis come in smooth, longhaired and wirehaired coats, so grooming ranges from a quick wipe-down to regular brushing.
Most Minis are clever, bold and devoted, often bonding hardest with one person. They can be stubborn, wary of strangers and quick to bark. That nose and prey drive show up on walks, where squirrels and every fresh scent make each block slow going. A lean body, ramps instead of jumps and patient house-training matter as much as the daily walk. Dogs vary, so judge the dog in front of you.
