The Doberman Pinscher was developed in Germany in the 1880s by Louis Dobermann, a tax collector who wanted a dog to protect him on his rounds. It's a lean, muscular working dog with a short, glossy coat in black, red, blue or fawn with rust markings. Ears and tails may be natural or cropped and docked.
Many Dobermans are affectionate, sensitive and very attached to their people, though they tend to be reserved with strangers. Consistent, reward-based training works best. In Tampa, that means getting a Doberman used to busy sidewalks, Riverwalk crowds and neighbors' dogs early on, and planning exercise around the heat, since these dogs are built for running, not long humid afternoons outside.
