Pugs began as companions at the Chinese imperial court and reached Europe with Dutch traders in the sixteenth century. Today's Pug is a sturdy 14 to 18 pound dog with a wrinkled face, big dark eyes, a tightly curled tail and a fawn or black coat. Most are sociable, playful and happy to follow their people from room to room, which suits a quiet apartment or a small house near downtown.
The flat face is the main thing to plan around. Pugs can struggle to breathe and cool off, so Tallahassee's long humid summers mean air conditioning and short outings. They also shed heavily despite the short coat, and their skin folds need regular cleaning. Pugs vary in energy and health, and lifespan estimates run from about 11 to 15 years.
