Border Collies come from the hills along the Anglo-Scottish border, where shepherds wanted a dog that could gather sheep with speed, focus and very little instruction. They're medium-sized, usually 30 to 55 pounds, with rough or smooth double coats in black and white and many other colors. Their intense stare, called eye, is a herding trait.
That working heritage means a Border Collie wants a job. Fenced parks, trail loops and an owner who enjoys training make a good match, while long stretches alone can lead to barking, digging or herding the household. Shedding is moderate, with heavier seasonal blowouts. Because many adoptable dogs are mixes, energy, size and coat vary from dog to dog.
