The American Bully was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, mainly from the American Pit Bull Terrier, with American Staffordshire Terrier and bulldog breeds mixed in. The goal was a companion with a heavier, more muscular frame and a people-loving nature. Bullies come in several size varieties, from compact Pockets to tall XLs, in nearly every color except merle.
Many are affectionate, eager to please and happiest leaning against someone on the couch. Their strength makes early training and leash manners important, especially on busy Orlando sidewalks and trails, and tolerance of other dogs varies, so introductions should be gradual. Training and history shape behavior more than looks do. The short coat needs little grooming, but keeping a muscular dog lean protects its joints.
