Anatolian Shepherds come from the central Turkish plateau, where flock-guarding dogs of this type protected sheep and goats from wolves. They lived alongside the animals and decided for themselves when to step in. Adults are large and rangy, with males often 110 to 150 pounds, and most wear a fawn coat with a dark mask over a thick undercoat.
At home, many are calm, observant and devoted, but they stay wary of strangers and protective of their territory. They mature slowly, often taking two to three years, think independently and respond poorly to harsh handling. In Miami, that means secure fencing, patient socialization with neighbors and passersby, and a plan for heavy seasonal shedding. Dogs vary, so a dog's own personality matters as much as the breed.
