The Akbash is a white livestock guardian from western Turkey, where shepherds relied on it to live with their flocks and drive off wolves. Its name, akbaş, means white head. Tall, lean and long-legged, it blends mastiff power with sighthound speed, usually weighing 75 to 140 pounds. The double coat comes in medium or long lengths and blows its undercoat heavily once a year.
Most Akbash dogs are calm, quiet and gentle with their own family, yet aloof with strangers and watchful of unfamiliar dogs. They think for themselves, mature slowly over two to three years and like to patrol their territory. That means secure fencing, early socialization and an owner who wants a guardian rather than a lap dog. Temperament varies from dog to dog.
