Shepherd isn't one breed. It's a label for dogs with herding or flock-guarding roots, and on adoption listings it most often points to a German Shepherd or a German Shepherd mix. Australian, Belgian, Dutch and English Shepherds and crosses with Labs or Huskies also carry the name. Their ancestors gathered, moved and protected livestock, which is why so many are alert and quick to learn.
Most are medium to large, roughly 45 to 90 pounds, with a thick coat that sheds and a strong urge to stay near their people. Some are reserved or protective with strangers, and herding instincts can show up as nipping or chasing bikes. With so many students on bikes and scooters in Gainesville, practice around moving wheels is worth the effort. A dog's mix and age shape its energy more than the label does.
