Border Collies come from the hills along the Anglo-Scottish border, where shepherds wanted dogs that could gather sheep with speed, focus and almost no instruction. They're medium-sized and athletic, usually 30 to 55 pounds, with a double coat that's either rough and feathered or smooth. Black and white is the most familiar, but the breed comes in many colors.
Many are quick learners and bond closely with their families, though some stay reserved with strangers. In Fort Myers, that sharp mind and thick coat both need planning: the coat sheds moderately, more at certain times of year, and the heat limits when a dog can really run. Dogs vary, and a mix may show only part of the herding drive, so watch how each dog handles stimulation and noise.
