The Carolina Dog is a lean, medium-sized dog with tall pointed ears, a fishhook tail and a coat that's usually ginger or buff. Dogs of this type roamed the pine forests and swamps of the Southeast, and biologist I. Lehr Brisbin drew attention to them in the 1970s. Despite the "American Dingo" nickname, they aren't descended from Australian dingoes.
Carolina Dogs tend to bond tightly with their families and stay reserved with strangers. They're clever and resourceful, which can mean digging and fence testing. Many dogs listed under this name are identified by looks alone, so how a dog actually behaves tells you more than the label. Expect moderate shedding, heavier when the seasonal coat turns over.
