French Bulldogs trace back to small English Bulldogs that lace workers carried to France in the 1800s, where they were crossed with local dogs and became fixtures of Parisian cafés. The upright bat ears were later set in the American breed standard. A Frenchie is compact and muscular, usually 16 to 28 pounds, with a square head, a short muzzle, loose wrinkled skin and a smooth coat in brindle, fawn, cream or white patterns.
Most are playful, affectionate and adaptable, and they bark less than many breeds. The flat face is the trade-off, bringing breathing, heat, skin and spine problems that shape daily care. A dog listed as a French Bulldog may also be a mix, since looks alone can't confirm ancestry. In DC, plan around humid summers and cold snaps.
