Coonhound is a family of American scent hounds developed to trail raccoons at night and hold them up a tree. Six breeds carry the name: Black and Tan, Redbone, Bluetick, Treeing Walker, American English and Plott. A dog listed as a Coonhound may be one of these or a mix, so size, energy and volume vary from dog to dog. Most have a short, easy coat, long drooping ears and a booming bay.
Indoors, many coonhounds are sociable, gentle couch companions. Outdoors, the nose takes over, which means a leash, daily exercise and patient, treat-based training. Raccoons are among the animals DC Health flags for rabies, so a hound that goes after their scent is one more reason to keep it leashed on city streets and trails and to keep vaccinations current.
