The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is the older of the two corgi breeds, developed in Cardiganshire, Wales, as a cattle drover that nipped at heels and stayed low enough to dodge kicks. It's long and heavy-boned, usually 25 to 38 pounds, with a full fox-like tail, large rounded ears and coats ranging from red and sable to brindle and blue merle.
In a city like DC, that herder's mind shows up as watchfulness. Many Cardigans are loyal and affectionate at home but reserved with strangers, and some bark at the doorbell or nip at heels when excited. They're smart and respond well to reward-based training. Plan for heavy seasonal shedding, regular brushing, and back protection by keeping the dog lean and limiting jumps. Each dog varies, so a Cardigan's own personality matters more than the breed description.
