The Italian Greyhound is the smallest of the sighthounds, a miniature greyhound standing about 13 to 15 inches tall and usually weighing under 15 pounds. Small dogs of this type appear in Roman art and Renaissance paintings and were favorites of European nobility, though they were originally used to course hare and rabbit. Today the AKC places them in the Toy Group. Their satiny coat, long slender legs, deep chest and high-stepping gait give them an elegant, fragile look.
Most Iggies are affectionate, gentle and a little sensitive, happiest pressed against their people or burrowed under a blanket. They sprint joyfully but tire quickly, chase anything small that moves and usually need leashes or secure fences. Thin skin and fine bones make them prone to cold and leg injuries, and their teeth need daily care, so adopters should plan for gentle handling and attentive routines.
