Red-and-white spaniels have hunted the Welsh countryside for centuries, and the Welsh Springer Spaniel is their modern descendant: a medium-sized gun dog built to find birds and spring them into the air for the hunter. It is a separate breed from the better-known English Springer, slightly smaller, with a flatter, softer coat that only ever comes in rich red and white. The Kennel Club recognized it in 1902, and the AKC followed in 1906.
Many Welshies are devoted, steady and affectionate with their own people while staying reserved, sometimes shy, with strangers. They tend to want company and can become clingy, so they suit households where someone is around much of the day. Adopters should also expect a real appetite for exercise, regular brushing and attention to ears and hips. The breed is uncommon, so rescues see relatively few.
