The Shar-Pei is a medium dog from southern China, where it guarded homes and livestock. Adults weigh about 45 to 60 pounds and stand 18 to 20 inches tall, with deep wrinkles, a broad muzzle, small folded ears and a harsh, short coat. The name means sand skin, and the AKC recognized the breed as the Chinese Shar-Pei in 1992.
Many Shar-Peis are calm, clean and devoted to their families, and reserved with strangers and sometimes with other dogs. In a dense city like San Francisco, that makes early socialization and steady training especially useful on narrow sidewalks and at busy corners. Their skin and eyes need regular attention, so plan for routine veterinary care. Dogs vary, and a Shar-Pei's own history and personality count for more than the breed label.
