Dr. Antonio Nores Martínez developed the Dogo Argentino in Córdoba, Argentina, in the 1920s as a brave pack hunter for wild boar and puma. It's a muscular, all-white dog of roughly 80 to 100 pounds with a short, smooth coat, and the AKC places it in the Working Group.
Many Dogos are affectionate and playful with their families, yet they're also powerful, confident and driven to chase. Coyotes share San Diego's suburbs and canyons, so that chase instinct is one more reason for a leash and a secure yard. Dogs vary, but most need consistent handling, early socialization and plenty of exercise. Deafness linked to the white coat is a known concern.
