The Pomeranian descended from larger German Spitz dogs and takes its name from Pomerania, on the Baltic coast. Queen Victoria's love of small Poms helped shrink the breed to today's 3 to 7 pounds, though some shelter Poms run heavier. The look is unmistakable: a standoff double coat, a plumed tail carried over the back, small pricked ears and a foxy face.
Pomeranians tend to bond closely, notice every sound and enjoy learning tricks, but dogs vary, so a Pom's own history matters more than the label. Plan on brushing several times a week, regular dental care, barking training, and protection from falls, rough play and larger dogs. Gentle handling suits adults and older children best.
