The Australian Kelpie is a lean, prick-eared herder developed in 1870s Australia from Scottish working collies to move sheep across hot, dry country. The short, weather-resistant double coat comes in black, red, blue and tan, with or without tan points, and sheds moderately year-round. That heritage of heat and distance is why Kelpies are built for long days outdoors.
Kelpies are quick learners, loyal to their household and often reserved with strangers. Without a job, many herd kids, chase bikes, bark or dig. In San Bernardino, that job can be trail running, fetch, agility or scent games. Working-line dogs tend to have more drive than show-line dogs, and every Kelpie varies, so watch how a dog handles excitement and downtime.
