Great Danes are German, not Danish. They descend from the boar-hunting hounds of German nobility, mastiff and greyhound-type dogs powerful enough to hold game and fast enough to catch it. Adults stand 28 to 32 inches or more at the shoulder, weigh roughly 110 to 175 pounds, and have a short, smooth coat in colors from fawn and brindle to harlequin and black.
Many Danes are gentle, friendly and surprisingly calm at home, happy to lean on a person or sprawl across the couch. Their size still shapes daily life in Sacramento: bigger food bills, a large vehicle for vet trips, and careful puppy growth. Lifespans often run seven to ten years, and bloat and heart disease are real concerns. Coat care is minimal, though the dry summers call for planning around heat.
