The Chow Chow is a medium, heavy-boned spitz from northern China, usually 45 to 70 pounds, with a lion-like ruff, a scowling expression and a blue-black tongue. The coat is either rough and offstanding or smooth and dense, but both are double coats that shed heavily, so a good brush and a strong vacuum come with the dog.
Chows tend to be dignified, independent and deeply loyal to a small circle of people, while staying reserved with strangers. Many are quiet and tidy indoors, which suits Riverside's calmer residential streets, but they rarely seek constant attention and dislike rough handling. Early socialization, patient training and careful heat management matter, and each Chow's personality varies.
