A black Lab is a Labrador Retriever in the breed's original color, not a separate breed. The breed traces back to the St. John's water dogs of Newfoundland and was refined in Britain as a gun dog, which explains the dense, water-resistant double coat, the otter tail and the love of retrieving. Adults usually weigh 55 to 80 pounds, and a small white chest spot is normal.
Color doesn't set personality. Black Labs are typically outgoing, eager to please and very food-motivated, though dogs vary with age, background and training. That means a dog who needs daily exercise, steady training, measured meals and regular brushing, since shedding is moderate to heavy. Most Labs mature slowly, so expect a bouncy adolescence before a calmer adult.
