Papillons are toy spaniels from France and Belgium, named for the French word for butterfly because of their large, fringed, upright ears. Some dogs have drooping ears instead. These are called Phalènes and belong to the same breed. Toy spaniels like these appear in European paintings from the 1500s, and the American Kennel Club placed the Papillon in its Toy Group in 1935.
A Papillon weighs about 5 to 10 pounds, yet it's sturdier and more athletic than it looks. The long, silky coat has no undercoat, so grooming is lighter than the coat suggests, though shedding is moderate. These dogs are bright, social and often vocal, and many shine at agility and trick training. In Modesto, that means a dog that's happy in a small home but needs daily play and gentle handling around kids and bigger dogs.
