Anatolian Shepherds come from the high plateau of central Turkey, where flock-guarding dogs of this type have protected sheep and goats from wolves and other predators for a very long time. They live alongside livestock and decide for themselves when to step in. Adults are big and rangy, usually fawn with a dark mask and a thick undercoat, though many colors occur.
At home they tend to be calm, observant and loyal, but the guarding instincts stay strong. Many are wary of strangers, protective of territory and inclined to roam if fences allow. In LA, that means thinking about delivery drivers, gate latches and late-night barking before you bring one home. They mature slowly and respond poorly to harsh handling.
