The Xoloitzcuintli is an ancient Mexican breed, and clay figures of hairless dogs turn up in West Mexican burial sites. Today's Xolos come in toy, miniature and standard sizes, each in a hairless and a coated variety, so a Xolo in Tucson might weigh 10 pounds or 55. Hairless dogs have smooth, tough skin in shades from black and slate to red and bronze.
Many Xolos are calm, attentive and devoted to their families while staying reserved with strangers. In Tucson the main care questions are sun and heat: hairless skin needs pet-safe sunscreen, moisturizer and regular baths, while coated Xolos need much less skin care. Dogs of the breed vary, so a dog's own personality matters more than its variety or size.
