The Pembroke Welsh Corgi comes from Pembrokeshire in southwest Wales, where the breed worked as a cattle drover, nipping at heels and ducking under kicks thanks to its low build. The name comes from Welsh words for dwarf and dog. Pembrokes have a foxy face, upright ears, a long sturdy body and a weather-resistant double coat in red, sable, fawn or black and tan, often with white markings.
Many Corgis are bright, outgoing and eager to join in, with a loud bark and a herder's urge to chase or nip at moving feet. Reward-based training usually works well. The coat sheds all year, with heavier sheds in spring and fall, and the long back and short legs mean weight and jumping deserve attention. In Tucson, that adds up to plenty of vacuuming and desert-smart walks.
