The Parson Russell Terrier takes its name from the Reverend John Russell, a hunting parson in Devon, England, who wanted a mostly white terrier with legs long enough to keep up with foxhounds. Today's Parson stands about 13 to 15 inches tall, weighs roughly 13 to 17 pounds, and wears a smooth or broken coat that is mostly white with black or tan markings.
In Tucson, that working heritage shows up in daily life. Many Parsons are bold, friendly and affectionate at home, but they dig, chase and bark when bored, and some are scrappy with other dogs. Smooth coats shed noticeably, and broken coats may need occasional stripping. They suit patient adopters who enjoy training, can offer daily exercise and keep the yard fence tall and tight.
