Coonhound is a family of American scent hounds rather than one breed. The Black and Tan, Redbone, Bluetick, Treeing Walker, American English and Plott were all developed to follow a raccoon's trail at night and bay at the base of the tree until the hunters arrived. Dogs listed as Coonhound in shelters are often one of these or a mix, usually with a short, easy coat, long ears and a big voice.
In Gilbert, that nose and voice shape daily life. Canal paths are full of smells, and a leash is a must because scent can override everything else. Many coonhounds are sociable, relaxed indoors and happy on the sofa, but they can be stubborn and loud when bored. Weights run from about 45 to over 100 pounds, so a dog's build and energy matter more than the label.
