Sweden's Hamiltonstovare is named for Count Adolf Hamilton, founder of the Swedish Kennel Club, who showed the first examples in 1886. It was developed to trail hare and fox on its own, giving tongue so hunters could follow. It's a medium-sized, athletic hound, usually 50 to 60 pounds, with a harsh, close-lying coat in black, tan and white.
At home, many Hamiltonstovares are friendly and even-tempered with people and other dogs, but the nose still leads. In Little Rock that means secure fencing, a long line on trails, and recall practice that never really ends. The coat is easy to care for, with moderate shedding. Because the breed is rare outside Scandinavia, adopters may wait for the right dog. Saving a search on this page is an easy way to hear when one is listed.
