Belgian Shepherds come from Belgium, where herding dogs were sorted into one breed in 1891 with four coat types: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. Most registries treat them as one breed, while the AKC lists four. Adults usually weigh 40 to 75 pounds and stand 22 to 26 inches tall.
The short-coated Malinois type generally copes with long southern summers more easily, while Groenendaels and Tervurens carry a dense double coat. Dogs labeled Belgian Shepherd are often Malinois or Malinois mixes, so it helps to know what each coat type needs. All are alert, devoted and busy-minded, and they usually do best with an owner who enjoys training.
