The Beauceron is France's largest native herding dog, developed on the plains around Chartres to move and guard big flocks over long distances. Its short, weatherproof double coat comes in black and tan or harlequin, and the tan leg markings earned it the nickname "red stockings." Double dewclaws on each hind leg are another hallmark of the breed.
Beaucerons are typically intelligent, loyal and reserved with strangers, and many are sensitive to tone. They mature slowly, often not settling until around age three. In Little Rock, that means time for daily exercise, calm and consistent training, and early socialization, plus brushing through a heavy seasonal shed. Dogs vary, so a Beauceron's own personality matters more than the breed description.
