Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the plateau of central Turkey, where dogs of this type spent centuries living with flocks and protecting them from predators. Adults are big and rangy, often 80 to 150 pounds, with a short to medium fawn coat and dark mask, though many colors occur. A thick undercoat means a heavy seasonal shed.
At home, most are calm, observant and loyal to their whole family, but the guarding instinct stays strong. Many are suspicious of strangers, protective of their yard and inclined to roam if the fence allows. They mature slowly, think independently and respond poorly to harsh handling, and dogs vary, so adopters should expect patient socialization and secure fencing.
