The American Bully was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, mainly from the American Pit Bull Terrier with American Staffordshire Terrier and bulldog breeds mixed in. The aim was a companion with a heavier, more muscular frame and a calm, people-loving nature. Bullies come in several size varieties, from compact Pockets to tall XLs, in nearly every color, with a short coat that sheds lightly to moderately.
Many are affectionate, eager to please and happiest leaning on someone on the couch. Their strength makes early training, good leash manners and careful introductions to other dogs important. In Little Rock, adopters also need to weigh city rules for pit bull–type dogs, rental and insurance policies, and a muscular build that runs hot in summer and stays healthiest when kept lean.
