German Shepherd Dogs came out of Germany around 1900, developed from regional herding dogs into a capable, intelligent working breed. They're long-bodied, athletic dogs with erect ears, a bushy tail and a dense double coat, most often black and tan, sable or solid black. Adults commonly weigh 50 to 90 pounds, depending on the dog's sex and build.
Many Shepherds are loyal, quick to learn and naturally watchful, and plenty are reserved with strangers. In Montgomery, that usually means a Shepherd does best with a routine of training, daily exercise and company. The coat sheds heavily, so expect fur on floors and in the car. Every dog differs, and a calm adult whose personality is already clear can be an easier match than a young, untested dog.
