Louis Dobermann, a German tax collector, developed the Doberman in the late 1800s as a capable companion for his rounds. The result is a sleek, muscular working dog with a short, glossy coat in black, red, blue or fawn with rust markings. Many American Dobermans have cropped ears and docked tails, though natural ones are becoming more common.
Many Dobermans are affectionate, sensitive dogs that stay close to their people, and they tend to be watchful with strangers. Reward-based training and steady socialization go a long way. In Mobile's mild climate the short coat needs little upkeep and sheds moderately, but the breed's heart health, daily exercise and need for company deserve honest planning before you adopt.
