American Staffordshire Terriers descend from bull-and-terrier dogs brought over from Britain in the 1800s, and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1936. They're stocky, muscular, medium-sized dogs, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a broad head and a short, glossy coat in nearly any color. That coat is easy to keep up in Mobile's humidity, needing little more than a regular brush and an occasional bath.
Most AmStaffs are confident, affectionate and goofy with their people, and many like to lean on or climb onto a favorite person. Their strength calls for training and leash manners, and some are selective with other dogs even when well socialized. Because the breed is often grouped with pit bull types, adopters should check rental policies and insurance before bringing one home. AmStaffs are common in shelters and often overlooked.
